Plum Creek Winery has been dedicated to making Colorado-grown wines of excellent quality for more than 30 years
We first put roots down in growing wine grapes in 1980. Knowing Colorado has extremely limited areas for grape production we searched Mesa County, one of the areas in western Colorado renowned for growing peaches, cherries and apples. We correctly figured that if the weather was temperate enough for fruit trees it was likely wine grapes could be grown and thrive.
Four years later, in 1984, we founded Plum Creek Winery and embarked on a pioneering venture of making premium wines from grapes grown only in Colorado. It was a unique idea at the time for a winery to commit to using only grapes grown in Colorado. As a mark of our early venture Plum Creek holds Colorado winery license No. 10, the oldest license of all of the state’s wineries now in existence.
Our Mesa County vineyards are within five miles of the small farming community of Palisade – – within the Grand Valley AVA – – and situated primarily on East Orchard Mesa.
Plum Creek wines start with ripe fruit. Gentle handling of the grapes and careful blending by the winemaker produce wines with style and elegance.
Enhancing guests’ enjoyment of Plum Creek’s award-winning wines is an inviting tasting room which features a redwood tasting bar beneath huge maple beams. Antique furniture and hand-woven rugs add to the tasting room’s Old World charm. A variety of artwork from owner Sue Phillips’ collection is on display, including the original watercolors featured on Plum Creek wine labels and on posters for local wine festivals.
A jaunty 7 1/2-foot-tall metal sculpture of a rooster made out of rusted farm tools (known to friends of the winery as Chardonnay Chicken) announces the entrance to the tasting room. Our friendly tasting room staff takes pride in making each visit memorable. The beginning enthusiast will discover as much about Plum Creek and our wines as will the experienced wine lover.
After more than 30 years we remain dedicated to our mission of making Colorado-grown wines of excellent quality. “Colorado is where our heart is,” says owner Sue Phillips. “We invite you to discover Colorado’s true distinction of place in Plum Creek wines.”
